Carbon Budget
The carbon budget is the maximum amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted into the atmosphere to avoid exceeding certain global temperatures. It is calculated based on past emissions and future projections, and can be distributed among different countries or industries. The amount of the carbon budget varies depending on climate projections and the goals that are to be achieved. However, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that in order to avoid a global temperature increase above 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, the total carbon budget available for the period 2011-2100 is about 1000 billion tonnes of CO2, for an average of about 42.2 billion tonnes per year: in 2021 alone, about 51 billion were emitted.
