Saltwater intrusion, also known as a saltwater wedge, is a process in which saltwater from the ocean advances towards rivers or freshwater aquifers due to rising sea levels or reduced availability of freshwater due to human activities such as water extraction or dam building. This process can compromise the quality of freshwater and make it difficult to use for irrigation, food production, and livestock watering. It can also have negative consequences for the ecosystem and biodiversity in the affected area.
